Crowns and Bridges

Missing, fractured, or damaged teeth significantly impact your daily life. Eating, chewing, and enjoying food become more difficult. You may also feel self-conscious about smiling, talking, and interacting with other people.

The good news is that dental crowns and bridges can help with missing or damaged teeth, and Dr. Ramsay and her team at Preston Ridge Dental can help.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown fully covers a damaged or decayed tooth, preserves the remaining healthy tooth structure, and protects the root. It closely mimics the shape and shade of your natural tooth, so it blends seamlessly with your smile. A crown restores aesthetics and chewing function.

Dr. Ramsay might recommend a dental crown for these circumstances:

  • To replace a large, broken, or lost filling
  • To strengthen a tooth that’s had root canal treatment
  • To repair a severely cracked, damaged, or decayed tooth
  • To cover a tooth with cosmetic flaws, like size or shape discrepancies
  • To be the restoration for a single implant

How Dental Crowns and Bridges Benefit You

You'll enjoy several benefits from restoring your smile with dental crowns or bridges.
Restored Function
When your bite is properly aligned, you can bite, chew, and eat with ease. Repairing or replacing a tooth restores function.
Restored Aesthetics
Repairing or replacing a compromised tooth restores your smile's beauty and appearance, which can build confidence.
Proper Tooth Alignment
Replacing a missing tooth with a bridge prevents shifting and ensures that you maintain proper tooth and bite alignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, in many cases, a dental bridge can replace multiple missing teeth, though the right solution really depends on your unique situation. Dr. Ramsay evaluates each patient individually, taking a conservative, whole-body approach to determine whether a bridge, implants, or another restorative option will best serve your long-term oral health.

Understanding Tooth Replacement

Traditional bridges typically work well for replacing one to three consecutive missing teeth, anchored by crowns on the adjacent natural teeth or supported by dental implants. For larger gaps or multiple missing teeth in different areas of the mouth, Dr. Ramsay may recommend alternatives like implant-supported bridges or partial dentures, which can offer better stability and preserve more of your natural tooth structure.

A few factors that go into this decision include:

  • Location of the gap — Bridges work best for adjacent teeth rather than gaps scattered throughout the mouth.
  • Condition of neighboring teeth — Healthy adjacent teeth are needed to support a traditional bridge.
  • Bone health — Adequate jawbone density matters most for implant-supported options.
  • Long-term goals — Some patients prioritize preserving natural teeth, while others prioritize durability.

Because cosmetic and restorative work like bridges isn't always fully covered by dental insurance, we offer several ways to make treatment affordable. We accept dental insurance and also work with financing partners like Cherry and CareCredit for pay-over-time options. Our in-house dental savings plan is another great alternative, especially for patients without insurance.

The best next step is a consultation with Dr. Ramsay, who can assess your smile and recommend the option that fits both your health needs and your budget.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A bridge uses two crowns as anchors. They attach to healthy teeth while supporting prosthetic teeth in between. Like dental crowns, the bridge is made of porcelain and designed to complement your smile while restoring chewing function.

A dental bridge can be an ideal solution for patients who aren't candidates for dental implants due to bone loss or who don’t want to undergo the surgery required for dental implants.

Getting a Dental Crown or Bridge: What’s the Process?

Whether you’re getting a bridge or crown, the process is similar. It typically takes two visits with Dr. Ramsay. During the first appointment, she takes impressions of your teeth and prepares them for their crown or bridge. You’ll leave wearing a temporary version of your restoration.

Your second visit takes place after a dental lab has handcrafted your restoration, which usually takes about two weeks. Dr. Ramsay will permanently place your crown or bridge and make any adjustments necessary to ensure that you have the full chewing function you enjoyed before your restoration.

Testimonial

She is extremely thorough and has the latest equipment.

We feel fortunate to have found Dr. Ramsey several years ago for our dental needs. She is extremely thorough and has the latest equipment. On a recent visit, we found one of my previous fillings needed to be replaced with a crown. On my next visit, Dr. Ramsey did the core buildup. My third visit is now scheduled to complete the installation of the new crown. I have only experienced very minimal discomfort so far. Dr. Ramsey has also replaced another crown for me that went missing. I totally trust her with my dental needs.
